This set of Beehive Field Recordings - featuring Sierra Hull and Justin Moses, Jake Blount, Presley Barker, and The Kody Norris Show - was captured live in Raleigh, NC during the IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) annual "World of Bluegrass" conference.
These sessions were co-produced with Dylan Locke and sponsored by County Sales Records.
Sierra Hull & Justin Moses - "Takin a Slow Train"
In her first 25 years alone, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sierra Hull hit more milestones than many musicians accomplish in a lifetime. After making her Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 10, the Tennessee-bred virtuoso mandolinist played Carnegie Hall at age 12, then landed a deal with Rounder Records just a year later. Now 28-years-old, Hull has released her fourth full-length album for Rounder: an elegantly inventive and endlessly captivating collection called 25 Trips.
Jake Blount - "Boll Weevil"
Jake Blount is an award-winning banjoist, fiddler, singer and scholar based in Providence, RI. He is half of the internationally touring duo Tui and a 2020 Strathmore Artist in Residence. Although he is proficient in multiple performance styles, he specializes in the music of black and indigenous communities in the southeastern United States, and in the regional style of Ithaca, New York. He foregrounds the experiences of queer people and people of color in his work. He has studied with modern masters of old-time music, including Bruce Molsky, Judy Hyman (of the Horse Flies), and Rhiannon Giddens and Hubby Jenkins (Carolina Chocolate Drops.)
His first full-length solo album, Spider Tales, on Free Dirt Records is set for release on May 29, 2020.
It is available now for pre-order.
Presley Barker - "Matchbox Blues"
Presley Barker has been singing and playing acoustic guitar for eight years. Living in the NC mountains and listening to Doc Watson on the radio inspired Presley to begin playing music. He has appeared on the NBC Today Show with Al Roker. He has played the National Folk Festival, Richmond Folk Festival, Lowell Folk Festival, Montana Folk Festival, Masters of Steel String Guitar Event in Washington, D.C., PBS Song of the Mountains Show, David Holt's State of Music, Blue Ridge Music Center, Houstonfest, and Merlefest. Presley also appeared on NBC's "Little Big Shots" with Steve Harvey and "Wonderama" TV show in New York City. Most recently, Presley was invited by Country Music Hall of Fame and Bluegrass Hall of Fame member Ricky Skaggs to play the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. Presley released his first solo album entitled "JUST-TEN" in the fall of 2015.
The Kody Norris Show - "Ramblin' Around"
Call it retro, hillbilly, bluegrass or rockabilly, the group strives for something Kody simply calls "dern good entertainment." Deeply rooted in North American folk music, Norris has crafted a performance that harkens back and tips a hat to the traditions created by Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin's showmanship, the Stanley Brothers' harmonies, performances of the Grand Ole Opry and a bit of Vaudeville. Top notch picking is center stage, but humor and visual flash are part of the entertaining package. Always clad in colorful, tailored suits adorned with rhinestones, ties, classic hats and ornate boots, the band earns its moniker as a "show." The brand is traditional, clean cut, acoustic and always entertaining.
