ADDING

patty, rain, and all the rest
hi, i'm a huge patty griffin fan...i haven't been hit this hard by a singer/songwriter since i discovered tom waits back in the late 1970s. i teach guitar for my primary income, and a student was responsible for getting me hooked. he brought in "1000 kisses" for his lessons, and by the 3rd week of teaching him songs from the album, i was completely smitten....with patty's words,music...and most of all , that voice--i think that she has a one-in-a-million talent. she has a deep melancholy that conjures up comparisons to kate wolf and billie holiday (in my mind). no--she doesn't sound anything like them--but just like those two dear departed spirits, this woman has soul....a very rich soul. "rain" is one of the most hypnotic of patty's songs. to me it sounds like a heart melting. there are lines ("sometime a hurt is so deep, deep, deep") that just tear me up. looking at the ratings for this song, i see that most FA listeners agree (someone gave this song a "1" rating? wow), so if you want to give me some of your own impressions, feel free. danny

Patty fan
I too am a big Patty Griffin fan; can't remember now how exactly I discovered her...hmmmm, I'll have to think on that. But I was lucky enough to have seen her perform live about a year ago. This only increased my admiration. For a tiny person with a lot of melancholy material and thoughtful, she really puts on an exciting show. The crowd really applauded when she started in on 'Making Pies.' I was wowed by her performance of a Smokey Robinson classic...the title of which escapes me just now!

froim one patty fan to another
The SmokeyRobinson song she sang was "Tears of a Clown"--I'm pretty sure, because when she was in Chapel Hill NC, (where I live), she sang it. Anyway, always nice to hear some thoughts from fellow Patty fans.

Rain
Rain is the sort of song that haunts you--what a perfect blend of voice, melody and lyric! I listen to it on Folk Alley, I listen to it on the CD--and each time it causes the ache in my heart that I am sure she hoped to inspire.
