Listening to Ferron at Sam's Coffee House I've seen Ferron several times: most recently at the Ottawa Folk Festival, two or three years ago. But I cannot hear her without thinking of the first time. In 1979 she played at Sam's Coffee House (Sam's Deli during the day) on Government Street (?) in Victoria, British Columbia. Folkies filled the place well beyond the Fire Marshal's limits, and I sat on the floor underneath a table, with just a sliver of the stage visible between the chairs, legs and bodies. The press of bodies, the heat, the odour of pot drifting from the bathrooms, and Ferron's remarkable voice and lyrics... probably the highlight of my late teens (no pun intended). I can hardly believe that 26 years have passed.
If anyone runs into Ferron, tell her that she doesn't come to Ottawa enough.
