Even though Vienna Teng has been composing and playing piano since she was a girl, she did the "right thing" and joined the staff of computer software giant Cisco Systems after graduating with a comp-sci degree from Stanford. But it's difficult to mess with destiny, and Teng gave up her Silicon Valley safety net for life on the road as a touring musician – a decision which worked out for her and made audiences very happy. At first, a pianist with violinist and cellist in tow was a might unusual for the rootsy crowd, but her acoustic singer/songwriter style fits perfectly with the contemporary folk scene. She's opened for a long list of A-listers (including Joan Baez, Shawn Colvin and Patty Griffin) and appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman. Her latest CD is Dreaming Through the Noise, released by Rounder Records in 2006.
