Since the band's birth in 1996, Solas has been loudly proclaimed
the most popular, influential and exciting Celtic band to ever emerge from the United States. Even before the release of their self-titled debut The Boston Herald
trumpeted Solas as "the first truly great Irish band to arise from America." The Irish Echo ranked Solas among "the most exciting bands anywhere
in the world." Since its inception the band has continually pushed the envelope
and charted new territory for Celtic music and wholly established themselves as
the most pioneering Celtic band of their time. And in the past ten years their
infectious energy and sound has caught the attention of listeners and fans
worldwide.
Solas will celebrate their first decade by announcing their
signing to the burgeoning and award-winning roots music label Compass Records
and their imminent duo DVD & CD release; Reunion: A Decade of Solas.
Capturing a magical evening and reunion in Philadelphia by all of their
members, present and past, this vivid, artistic and candid film gives their
fans an all access look into the band's world. An accompanying CD features
live performances of a wide selection of music from their very first release
through today. In addition, guest musicians Chico Huff, Ben Wittman,
John Anthony, Michael Aharon and singer songwriter Anjte Duvekot join Solas
on this exciting recording.
During the last decade, Seamus Egan (multi-instrumentalist:
flute, tenor banjo, mandolin, whistle, guitar and bodhran) and Winifred
Horan (fiddle and vocals) have anchored the band's sound and directed it
through its various configurations. Throughout its existence, Solas has
persistently delivered the qualities that distinguish it from any other band:
relentless energy and uncompromised stellar musicianship. The first seeds of
Solas featured the acclaimed Karan Casey (vocals) and John
Doyle (guitars), and later John Williams and Donal Clancy.
And the current lineup features Deirdre Scanlon (vocals), Mick
McAuley (button accordion), Eamon McElholm (guitar & keyboard),
Egan and Horan.
