Focus On: Mavis Staples - Live from Newport 2009

The former lead singer of The Staple Singers and a major voice of the civil rights movement, Mavis Staples has spent her career navigating the worlds of blues, gospel, pop, soul and political folk. When Staples and her band took the stage at the 50th anniversary Newport Folk Festival, they brought the house down. The veteran soul singer knows how to make an audience happy and she had this crowd in the palm of her hand - as she started to sing and the band kicked it up, people began to stream into the Harbor Stage area from all over the event site until the masses overflowed beyond the Folk Alley recording van.
