Focus On: Natalia Zukerman

Recorded at Franklin Hall, Kent State University

Growing up in New York City, Natalia Zukerman was influenced by music that ranged from the sounds of the city to the classical world of her parents: violinist Pinchas Zukerman and flutist Eugenia Zukerman. By the time she had enrolled in the liberal arts creative hotbed of Oberlin College, Natalia had relegated songwriting to her off hours while visual design assumed her primary focus. But, music was always there and, after graduation, the scales gradually tipped. Five CDs later (her latest is Gas Station Roses), Natalia is a successful touring singer/songwriter - as a solo artist and an accompanist and collaborator with artists including Susan Werner, Willy Porter, Catie Curtis and Janis Ian.

In 2011, she and Garrison Starr visited the Folk Alley studios in Franklin Hall at Kent State University and painted a picture for Jim Blum of her unexpected journey to folk singer.
