Focus On: The Greencards

The Greencards In the short time since they formed their band in 2003, The Greencards (Kym Warner-mandolin, Carol Young-bass and Eamon McLoughlin-fiddle) have won the Best New Band award in the 2004 Austin Music Awards contest, been nominated for Best Emerging Talent by the Americana Music Association, and landed a prime spot opening for Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.

The bluegrass musicians learned their craft growing up in Australia and England, countries not known for a focus on American roots music. The birth of The Greencards took place miles away from home – a recording studio in Austin, TX. Their musical influences range from bluegrass artists Sam Bush and the New Grass Revival to unexpected bands like Tom Petty and AC/DC.

Interview with The Greencards

The Greencards recently came through Northeast Ohio and stopped by the Folk Alley studios to play songs from their new album and discuss the circuitous route they took to bluegrass and becoming a band. The band releases Weather and Water on June 28 and is out on the road with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson performing at minor-league ballparks.

The Greencards sit down with Jim Blum to discuss roots music and their own roots in Australia and England. The band brings an unusual global perspective to the bluegrass band they assembled while living in Austin.

English fiddler Eamon McLoughlin adds musical elements from the British Isles. Other band influences include Australian trad, jazz and the New Grass Revival. Kym Warner talks about the importance of learning bluegrass playing firsthand.

The band gives background on their songs – including the old-time, scratchiness of “Jolly Hockeysticks,” the live version of “Time,” arranging “Almost Home,” using a bouzouki on “Like a Melody” and working with New Grass Revival guitarist Pat Flynn.
