Focus On: Kenny White

Even as a child, Kenny White seemed destined for a life as a professional piano player, carrying a plastic keyboard from room to room and playing back for his family tunes he heard on the radio. After it became obvious that his future was in music, White dropped out of college and moved to Boston, where he soon began touring with Livingston Taylor and Jonathan Edwards. He has since toured with or supported artists including Judy Collins and Cheryl Wheeler while building a career as a much in-demand session musician. The work he did as a jingle writer – for products such as Chevy trucks, Coke, Diet Coke and GE – put White’s music (but not his name or face) in millions of homes across America. White is also a talented producer who has worked on projects with, among others, Marc Cohn, Shawn Colvin and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.

White’s latest studio CD is Symphony in 16 Bars, released on Collins’ Wildflower Records label. Along with a healthy collection of White’s original songs, the album boasts an impressive array of guest artists, many pulled from his familiar ranks of studio musicians – the unknown, but often extremely talented, folks behind the scenes, dedicated to the music if not the fame. White remains a loyal Red Sox fan.
