Review Comments: Great CD, seller and price. I recommend this seller. I am glad to see that Rory is not forgotten. He influenced so many players and he like Mick Ronson, will live forever because of the music they made and the influence.
Remastered vs Original Mix

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)
Review Comments: This is Rory's 5th studio solo album and to me it is his best (I have 'em all with "Jinx" being 2nd best to me). However, the remastered cd version with the bonus tracks isn't as good as the original version. I agree with what learn4ever wrote in their review, it doesn't sound the same. My favorite tune from Rory is "At The Bottom" and on the remastered version there is added slide guitar parts that isn't on the original version. Also, whoever remastered this cd deleted the last verse that says "Takes a fall to land you on your knees..." and used what sounds like an outtake vocal of the first vocal line. If you can find the Castle label or Intercord label cd version of this(it costs more) you will get the original album version mix. With that being said, the remastered version isn't bad, it gives you a little different sound of "Against The Grain".
If you're new to Rory and want to check him out, I would suggest to start with his 2nd solo effort "Deuce"(fantastic guitar playing). Your best bet would be to buy the "Original Album Classics". You get 5 classic cd's from Rory (with "Deuce" & "Jinx" being in that set) for not too much money. Enough of my rambling, Long Live Rory Gallagher!!
Huh????

Review Comments: Umm, Huh? Many of these songs sound WAY different from the old cassette I have of this album -- especially one of my favorite songs by Rory -- Ain't too good -- this version is missing the lyrics from the bridge entirely!!!
NOT what I was expecting when I got this CD. Look for the original -- much better versions of the songs.
Yet another great release from Mr. Gallagher!

Review Comments: Rory Gallagher was one of the all-time great guitarists, period, and there's not a bad release in his entire cataloge. This was the first of his original lps that I bought and it will always be special for me as the primary introduction for me to his work.
I was fortunate enough to see Rory live in Ft. Worth at the Tarrant County Convention Center in 1976 when he opened for ZZ Top on their World Wide Texas Tour - Rory simply smoked those guys off their own Texas shaped stage! I will always remember his spoken intro to this release's "Souped Up Ford" at that show as saying that it was for all the people who, like him, love to be out on the open road in places like Montana and just put their foot into it. Road rock indeed!
Whether a rocker like "I Take What I Want" or a more introspective blues like "At The Bottom" this release is a winner and it's still the one of his that I play the most often.
The only knock on it is that the original master tapes have evidently been lost to the ages so the sound quality of this remaster isn't quite up to the standard set by the rest of the Buddah releases. But hats off to Rory's brother Donal for making the best sound possible and making this vital release available!
More magic from the People's Guitarist

Review Comments: 'Against the Grain' was fifth studio album from Gallagher after: 'Rory Gallagher', 'Deuce', 'Blueprint' and 'Tattoo'. This did not reach the excellence of the first of these and of course did not capture the unadulterated brilliance of the two live albums 'Live in Europe' and 'Irish Tour 74' but is still a great album. It is, somewhat sadly, the last Gallagher album in my collection, because Rory seemed to drift away from his recognisable style and subsequent albums were lacking the raw energy, exuberance and emotion of his early work.
A note for jld@balista.com: the fantastic album you are referring to is Taste's first album, released in UK in 1969 (the first album I ever bought!) - this has several stunning tracks including 'Catfish' which you mention. Well worth hunting this album out if you can find it. Taste's second and final studio album 'On The Boards' shows Gallagher at his worst and is frankly not worth listening to, which is amazing as it was shortly followed by his first studio album after Taste's breakup, 'Rory Gallagher', which is 5 stars plus - his best by far (unfortunately no longer available).
