Entrancing and Polished

Review Comments: "Afriki" is the fourth studio album by Habib Koité and Bamada. This is a polished set of songs that offer a warm, entrancing, consistent, and harmonic listening experience. Note that this music is not sung in English (primarily in Bambara, a language of Koité's native Mali), but the combination of the instrumentation and Koité's calm and powerful voice make the language more an instrument than anything else.

Afriki is one of those works that is better heard than read. From the rhythm of "Fimani" to the engaging "Africa," "Afriki" is a fantastic work that is worth purchasing. Highly recommended as casual background listening music.

Laidback guitar playing, with lots of balafon and ngoni

Review Comments: I prevously purchased Baro after having listened to his two songs from Muso Ko packaged with Windows Vista. At first when I listened to this album I was in for a bit of a letdown, because the rhythms and guitar playing are not at the same level of complexity as in those previous efforts. The guitar lines are simpler here, and the 3-2 clave syncopation is not as prominent.

With that said there are some very interesting ideas, that I got into after the second time I listened to the album, such as the animal horn playing and the use of the female African chorus. The message of the album is that Africans should focus on developing Africa rather than risking life and limb to go to other continents, and that somber message may have contributed to the more simplistic athmosphere.

Review Comments: Habib Koite is by far my favorite African musician, a true embassador of his beloved country: Mali and a crusader of peace, love and human rights!
I had the enormous blessing to see him in concert! Mmmm... such a beautiful multi-talented man, such a glorious vibrant spirit!
Habib's voice is like no other, extremely pure, heart opening, healing, inspiring, loving, passionate and beautiful.
He is an amazing composer, singer and guitarist and through his wondrous music can take you to places in your soul that you have never been! I own all of his CDs and love every single one of his songs. He's truly heaven sent. Simply magnificent!

Review Comments: Serendipitously I discovered Habib Koite 5 or 6 years ago, and have thus far accumulated all his recordings. This one was worth the wait! Just beautiful, peaceful, and exotic. I thoroughly disagree with the negative reviews---yes it is the same type of music, and no, i still dont understand the language he uses, but this one has a decidedly different taste to it. Still just soothing and inspirational. Really delightful!
