Review Comments: Kris Drever's debut disc is an excellent affair. He doesn't overplay, but hits the right balance. The song selection is strong. The opener written by Sandy Wright, "Steel & Stone (Black Water)," is a lovely track that marries melody & lyric, "We had a taste* on the wild frontier & the Ponderosa trail where a thousand lights light up the night like a giant Christmas tree; Where the gasoline leaks reach to the skies & the smoky chimney mountains, black water give them gold & silver, now they're breathing steel & stone." It's a gorgeous track. "Braw Sailin' on the Sea" is a traditional folk lament. "Green Grows the Laurel" is a lovely version of the traditional folk tune. Drever is the son of Wolfstone band member Ivan Drever. His vocals ache from the point of view of a bank robber on "Poor Man's Son." While I am unfamiliar with Drever's former band Fine Friday, the excellent quality of "Black Water" makes me want to hear more. This is quality traditional folk, moving & gripping. Enjoy!
