Johnny B. good

Album Rating: (3 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: John Sebastian as founding member, upfront maestro of mid '60's master folk-pop chart machine, Lovin' Spoonful, wrote classic songs like, "Daydream", "Summer in the City", etc.. By the end of the '60's, Lovin' Spoonful met a fork in the road and John set the table solo with this fine example of Singer/Songwriter etch and ache.

A sublime songwriter and a suberb storyteller, John Sebastian is somwhat forgotten and flung to the farside of folk/rock when he should be feted as a foremost writer of what is was when then.

"John B. Sebastian" is his solo LP released in 1969 has the bottom Top 40 almost hit, "She's a Lady" and his offered song to Frank Sinatra, "The Room Nobody Lives In", and a solo version of "You're a Big Boy Now". John stretches out with a rumba "Magical Connection", but truly this LP/CD was mostly him w/o utensils.

Later, in 1969, John played solo at Woodstock, was featured in that film as maybe forever captured as a gold-rimmed glasses, tied-dyed t-shirt, druggy example of excess.

Historic and hummable, this is a hallmark in the journey to the '70's.

I am so glad this is out on CD.

Review Comments: I've played my LP so much that it is so scratched that I wince every time I play it. But I can't help but play it again and again. It was loaned to me in college by a guy who left school and I've lost complete track of. My favorite track is "How have you been." The line about the turtle on the Long Island Expressway reminds me of a incident involving my brother-in-law. He'd come to visit us in Kansas after his school was finished for the year. He said the most interesting thing he saw in the little Flint Hills town we were in was the turtle walking across the yard. About 15 years later, we saw a turtle in his yard and I told him that the turtle had finally made it into the Cookson Hills where we live.

An Overlooked Classic

Review Comments: This recording was full of great music and genuine warmth. It never got the recognition it deserved. "You're a Big Boy Now" was a perfect song for moving from HS to college. Whether it was a commercial success or not, it remains one of my favorite albums and I am glad it is finally released on a more reasonably priced CD.

As much as I loved the album I would have pirated the $27.00 CD and sent a check to Sebastian

Review Comments: I bought this CD for one song. I bought the original album when it came outon vinyl and was so impressed by Buddy Emmons' steel guitar playing on "Rainbows All Over Your Blues" that I bought it on CD for that single song. It's John Sebastian and Buddy Emmons at their best. It's a must-have for me!

Somebody always does part ot first

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: I'll just add this: musicians both listen to what's come before and draw from it, but also are encouraged, inspired, enabled by the groundwork--the "Roots" laid for them. If it wasn't for the feel and the groove John laid down in "Baby, Don' Ya Get Crazy," we may never have had Josh Rouse giving us "Share the Love Vibration" 30+ years further on. Have a listen.
