Review Comments: My first problem in quantifying my love of this album is classification: I can't strictly call this folk, country, bluegrass, roots rock, or any other known genre, so I lack a name. Maybe we can call it "Jenny Music." Its close vocal harmony, mildly syncopated rhythms, and mainly (though not exclusively) acoustic instrumentation hint at several top-selling genres without locking into any one of them.

But that refusal to stand still tells us why so many listeners enjoy this group. Genre purists may scratch their heads, but we who love music for itself hear how the musical artistry and unaffected lyrics speak truth through our ears. I can't help recalling the LPs my father played as I grew. After a boyhood of Bill Monroe, the Lennon Sisters, Chet Atkins, and Dolly Parton, this sound sings to me of home.

Lyrically, this album deals largely with estrangement and loss. "Maybe the time just wasn't right." "I'm leavin' this prairie town." "Live and die and gone." In times like ours, when society's rapid march leaves many of us feeling like nomads in our own homes, these themes touch is where we live. And the lyrics offer more subtle poetry than many of us hear on regular commercial pop radio.

At a time when we can charitably call much music coming out of conglomerate studios disappointing, the Wailin' Jennys inspire hope that somebody still cares about the songs on which they put their names. Unprepossessing but not timid, singable but not duplicable, the Jennys embody what makes music real. Even after all this time, I still get a charge out of these songs.
