Review Comments: Now I've seen the reviews loving this cd but the fact that no one has yet to critize this cd just shows how little people actually know about Negro spirituals. First let me say I love negro sprituals so much, but this must be a JOKE! Where's that barbaric like passion for the gospel?
I keep looking for it but all I get is a glee club.
Also are they trying to pass off "Down by the riverside" as a negro spiritual? It's not, it's a civil rights song NOT a negro spiritual.
Though the songs are negro spirituals they qualities that make them negro spirituals are gone. Notice how they are sung on very high notes, negro sportuals are sung on low notes. There only one explination for this... they've been infuenced by european culture.
Another thing I've notice is that they SOUND calm. When you hear a true negro spiritual, the people singing AREN'T CALM! They scream, hoop, and holler, they squall, dance, squat, jump, leap, and belt the song out with ALL THEY'RE MIGHT! (That's what I mean by a barbaric like passion).
These people on the cd sound like they're singing because they have to, and that's SAD.
I've also notice how so many negro spirituals how negro spirtuals are becomining more feminine when they were once very masculine which might exlain why many negro spirituals today are are mostly sung by WOMEN when traditionaly they were sung by MEN and if they are sung by men they sing it very femininly, which futher concludes that the black church has and is becoming more feminine.
Last, is how fast the songs are sung (or how slow), whether by a bit or a lot, it's takes the beauty away from the songs and how they're orginally sung.
It's so sad that no one knows how to sing a negro spirituals, let alone know how it's supposed to be sung, people please don't waste your money.

Review Comments: I love this CD. It brings back all of the memories of singing spirituals in my church choir. Some are soft and sweet, others rock! This is spiritual music with soul and a beat. Very beautiful music from a time gone by.
Music for the Soul!!!!

Review Comments: What a fantstic compilation of American Folk Music and Negro Spirituals. This is music for the whole family and music that you'll enjoy hour after hour. Pure Americana. You don't need to be familiar with this style of music to enjoy it. Many of the songs here are arranged by John Wesley Work II and John Wesley Work III, pioneers in the arranging and documenting of Negro Spirituals and Folk music.
Great addition to your collection

Review Comments: One day I was really in the mood for some African-American spirituals. I looked online and came across this little beauty. It had a lot of the songs that I had been singing that week and I chose to buy it. I had never heard of the Fisk-Jubilee Singers before that. It's awesome and I feel good knowing that I am supporting a worthy cause. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes toe tapping songs that you can sing everyday.
Glorious Music...

Review Comments: I bought this CD not knowing anything about the group, having never heard of them before. I was attracted by the photo on the cover, and being a history buff, I thought there might be a great story behind the photo. How right I was. But more than that, there was amazing music behind the photo. It is impossible to listen to this music without a reaction from your spirit. I highly recommend this CD to anyone.
