Review Comments: Describing "Cash on Delivery" as one of the best Johnny Cash projects has enormous meaning when considering the pile of like-minded tributes. The subtitle "An Alternate Country Tribute to Johnny Cash" isn't entirely accurate since the project contains an eclectic range of Americana styles. The musical styles range from rockabilly ('Hey Porter' by The Dimaggio Bros.) and bluegrass ('Home of the Blues' by Schankman Twins) to psychobilly ('Jackson' by ADZ) and cowboy style western music ('Don't Take Your Guns to Your Guns to Town' by Lone Prarie). The unexpected gold nugget is Russell Means & Simon Stokes' 'Ballad of Ira Hayes.' This retelling combines Native American spoken word with traditional Indian and new age sounds. Arguably, this is the definitive version of an epic ballad. A further discussion of highlights would be futile since it would involve describing 75% of the songs. Wayne Kemp's hip-hop infused 'One Piece at a Time' is the only weak track on the disc. As a whole, the integrity is high and the musical artistry is compelling. Johnny Cash's music is interpreted in such a way to pay tribute to the Man in Black while reinterpreting his music to sound fresh to the ears of those who've heard these songs a hundred times. Up there with "Dressed in Black," "Cash on Delivery" stands as one of the most satisfying Johnny Cash tributes.
