Dance for Loons of all ages

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: 'Gravity Dance' is a very special brew of foot-tapping material which should have reached a wider audience. The Horseflies have musicianship to burn and write whacky, upbeat lyrics that twist your head in all directions, from syringes abandoned on the beach, to roadkills, glorious ballads and 'Talking Heads' like urban wit,("Passion is an Art Form'). Hard to fathom, from this time and place, how they didn't chart well. The CD remains resonant and the only thing I can hazard that might have undermined their popularity is that they pitched their tent in the wrong field. This isn't country stuff by a wide acre, inspite of mandolins, banjos and accordions. God Bless them, wherever they've re-incarnated.

One of the best overlooked albums of the 90's

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: The Horseflies were often lumped into the category of Bluegrass band, but they are so much more than that. The music is fiddle-driven, to be sure, but it's a unique blend of new-wave, alt-country and prog-rock, with some amazingly dark and off-kilter lyrics. From the lovely anthem on prostitution, "Sally Ann", to the kooky "I Need a Plastic Bag to Keep My Brains In", this is a very entertaining and unusual album. I don't even know if the band is still together, but I had the pleasure of seeing them live about the time "Gravity Dance" came out, and could they cook! The second of only two studio albums (to my knoweldge), this is one of my favorite CD's to come out of the 90's - highly recommended.
