Electric Hot Tuna

Album Rating: (4 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: I saw Hot Tuna so many times in the 70's, I can't even recall how many concerts I went to (for a myriad of reasons), and some of those concerts lasted at least six or seven hours. I remember when all of the material on this album was brand new, it was Electric Hot Tuna at their best. The songs lose a bit of something on this CD being recorded in the studio, this would have been much better as a live album, but it's still great today. But I still believe that the best Hot Tuna album was their first one, all acoustic.

Best played loud

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: This is one of the good electric Tuna albums, along with Hopkorv (not universally loved, except by me apparently). This is probably the most "commercial" of any HT albums, if it is possible to say such a thing, with a wink and a nod to that with the aptly titled "Hit Single #1", which actually got some radio rotation when it came out. Serpent of Dreams became an instant classic, and remains in the songlist today. I good intro to electric Tuna for the unitiated.

My favorite!

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: Heavy Hot Tuna, this is my favorite album by these guys. Not that there is a thing wrong with any of their other efforts; this is just the one that got to me. Heavier, little bit more "rock-ier" than their earlier efforts; "America's Choice" is where I recommend a newcomer to start.....

An "Invitation" to one legendary recording!!

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

"America's Choice"-Hot Tuna's first delivery with Bob Steeler taking over for Sammy Piazza on drums is the initial album that Jorma would call part of the "Metal Years" ("Yellow Fever" and "Hoppkorv" being the other two).

Bob Steeler fits into the fold perfectly. His solid rock and roll style allowed Jorma and Jack to dive head first into the more rocking sound but his jazz background gave them confidence to attempt entry into uncharted waters.

Although you have heard "America's Choice" has plenty of straight ahead rock and roll there is the milder "Sleep Song" to open the record. A solid track (Another example of Jorma's underrated lyrics) but if the album has one flaw (It is minor) "Invitation" or "Serpent Of Dreams" would have been the best way to travel.

"Funky #7" has become a most requested Hot Tuna song from the albums inception. Jack doing his thing and the band pulled a page from Cream's playbook by being able to extend the song for miles live and never lose the audiences fascination. The same could be said of "Walking Blues." Jorma could take a two minute blues song from the 1920's and give it the full throttle effect.

"Invitation" is not only one of Hot Tuna's best but a song any composer should proudly display. The energy level is off the charts and the band is locked into a higher zone.

"Hit Single #1" (Don't you love Jorma's humor?) is more rock and roll for the ears with a driving force that can knock you on the seat of your pants.

"Serpent Of Dreams" shows Jorma's lyrics can be poetry in motion. The tune is a song of Beauty. Those that have criticized Jorma for not being a formidable songwriter have not cleaned their ears. His ability to paint pictures through his words should have been more recognizable during the Airplane and classic Hot Tuna periods.

"I Don't Wanna Go" brings the tempo up again and the band is relentless in their power and passion.

"Great Divide: Revisited" ends the recording on a slower pace but in no way is it a musical let down. Pretty words and perfect sounds end a true classic release.

Enjoy the music and be well,

Hot Tuna at their rockin' best

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: One thing about this recording that is incredibly important...PLAY IT LOUD! You really got to in order to fully appreciate this rockin' release by Hot Tuna. American Choice is in my top ten favorite rock albums. Jorma and Jack were on a roll here and this really represents the golden age of Hot Tuna. So for all you old hippies out there, play it proudly!
