Love BNL

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: I am very pleased wtih this CD. It arrived promptly and in good condition.
I was glad to add this to my collection.

Had to let it grow on me...

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: Okay, so this is an awesome album. I became a BNL fan back in March 09, and I bought all their albums. I had all of them, and loved the other ones, but never really bothered with this one. Now that I listened, I realized what I was missing out on!

1. Jane- 5/5. One of my favorites, I love the guitar and chorus.
2. Intermittently- 5/5. Nice rocking song from BNL, they all sound great.
3. These Apples- 5/5. A great, catchy Ed song.
4. You Will Be Waiting- 5/5. A very nice slow, soothing song by Steve.
5. A- 5/5. Not a very complicated song concept, but I like the writing and rhythm.
6. Everything Old Is New Again- 5/5. Love this song. It's a nice slower one, but it has a catchy rhythm. I love Tyler's drumming in this one.
7. Alternative Girlfriend- 5/5. A very upbeat, rocking song. I don't find it to be very catchy, but love it.
8.Am I The Only One?- 5/5. Most likely the best song on the album, has a solid point too. Ed began writing it about his girlfriend (now his wife) but in the process of writing the song his brother died in a motorcycle accident, so it ended up being a dedication to his brother.
9. Little Tiny Song- 0/5. UGH. I HATE this song! To me, it sounds like nails on a chalkboard! Only bad song from the album.
10. Life, In a Nutshell- 5/5. One of the strongest tracks here. Upbeat, catchy, funny song.
11. The Wrong Man Was Convicted- 5/5. A beautiful, haunting tune.
12. Great Provider- 5/5. Recorded way back in 88 on the Buck Naked cassette. Was good to see them rerecord it for an actual album release.

Great Shape

Valiant Sophomore Effort, However Flawed

Album Rating: (4 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: The second album from the Ladies had a few very strong songs on it, but seemed to lack the strength that their later efforts have shown. It may be an unfair standard to put the band against itself when rating it, as this may be a better than average album for most bands, or maybe even great, but BNL has released much stronger albums since making this, with the exception of Born on a Pirate Ship. This is still worth buying, especially for fans of any of their non-radio stuff, but I wouldn't recommend it as the first album you pick up by them if you're new to the band. I don't see an album by BNL that isn't worth buying eventually. Even the Xmas album is worth buying, if only for sheer amusement.

Highlights of Maybe You Should Drive include three very strong songs: These Apples, A, and Life, in a Nutshell. Other enjoyable songs on the album are Jane, Intermittently, You Will Be Waiting, Everything Old is New Again, and Alternative Girlfriend.

Overall: Weak 4 (75% - 3.75 / 5)

Outshines Gordon

Album Rating: (5 of 5 stars)

Review Comments: Overall I'd have to say this is my all time favorite BNL album. There's just something about this album that really gets me in the gut. I know everyone thinks Gordon is just fantastic, and it is great, but this album seems to me to be a more polished and serious effort by BNL. There isn't one song on this CD that I dislike, and lyrically I think it's wonderful. "Maybe You Should Drive" is one of BNL's lesser known albums, and if you really like Maroon or Everything to Everyone, then perhaps this isn't your cup of tea, and you'll probably be disappointed. To me however, I think this is BNL at it's best, and I for one would like to hear more music like this from them.
