Artist Biography:
A Private Press is a songwriting and performance duo based in Philadelphia, PA. Singer and lyricist Nicola Dixon delivers pure, distinctive vocals over Ian Schaefer’s lush, songbook-tinged guitar. Their debut album, Risky, is a heartfelt study of the aesthetics of personal progress, behavior and change.

But what does it sound like? Our music has been succinctly described by 10 Mile Stereo as possessing “elegant composition and thoughtful execution”; while Tim Wales of Indie Bands Blog says that “an emotion riven vocal floats around a sparse yet highly effective guitar.”

Nicola Dixon was born in the UK, and then moved to the Deep South in the early nineties. Ian Schaefer spent his formative years in Lancaster, PA and later, New Orleans. When Nicola moved to Philadelphia to study at The University of the Arts, she formed a band which included Ian on bass.

So why should you give this album a listen? Well, Nicola vowed to only write songs about subject matter she had never heard anyone else sing about. The lyrics are focused, sincere and original. Ian is an imaginative musician whose interest in art, science and nature is as influential as his eclectic music collection. Together, the two weave a tapestry of signature melodies and intricate textures—songs that are both memorable and meaningful.

Thanks for listening.
