Lou Rhodes on Mercury Prize Shortlist

July 27, 2006

New folk singer/songwriter Lou Rhodes has made the shortlist of a dozen British or Irish artists competing for the prestigious U.K. award. According to something I saw on tv somewhere not in the U.S., the Mercury Prize is unique for the fact that emerging indie artists have a legitimate chance against better known groups, like this year's darlings, The Arctic Monkeys. It's a real mix of music with Rhodes going up against critical hit Richard Hawley, young jazzmeister Zoe Rahman, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, 80s band Scritti Politti and six others. The prize will be bestowed on Sept. 5 on BBC Radio 1, BBC 2 and online on BBC 4.
