Focus On: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - Newport 2009

Gillian Welch has a voice that reaches into the heart and soul of a true roots-based Americana sound that represents the next wave of folk music. She appeared at the Newport folk fest twice, once supported by long-time collaborator David Rawlings and the next day as the second member ofáThe David Rawlings Machine. Her turn on the mainstage followed a mad, policecar-assistedádash from the airport. She literally stepped out of her caráonto the stage, without aápause (or her glasses) - leadingáthe duoáto play, as partáofátheir set, an unexpected cover of "White Rabbit," along with other songs that demonstrate why Welch has developed a powerful following for her old-fashioned sound.

This concert was recorded live atátheáFortáStage at George Wein's Folk Festival 50 in Newport, RI as part of NPR's extensive coverage of the event.

As good as it gets for those of us who love the raw, honest sound of live acoustic music. Close your eyes and David and Gillian will carry you back to a simpler time.

I'm sittin' at my desk in my rented bungalow in southern Thailand listening to these great live tunes. What a blessing as there is not much for live music here except local Thai music or Thais doing their version of American music. Am an old fan of Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings-what an awesome combination they make. Thanks Folk Alley.....keep up the good work! An appreciative fan from Thailand.

Great concept and it can only get better with more live concerts. Thanks for the option to switch out of the regular programming...something special. Folk Alley's got what it takes. Thanks from Canada!

Gillian only does about 10 shows a year as opposed to her previous road warrior status so enjoy this. Her and David Rawliings put on memorable shows. You will never hear a better acoustic player than David and the sound he gets from that Epiphone 1935 parlor guitar that has F holes like a cello. Gillian is no slouch either, with the voice of an Angel. You will never see or hear a better acoustic duo, and this recording quality is excellent. If you ever get a chance to see them live do not miss it as this is as good as it gets. I have seen them several times including at MerleFest and they never seize to amaze.Peace!!
