Focus On: The Greencards

The Greencards may possibly be the best Americana artists with no native claim to North America. Fiddler Eamon McLoughlin left his London roots for Austin, Texas, where he met Australians Kym Warner (who plays mandolin and stringed instruments) and Carol Young (the maverick electric bass) at a recording session. The three had been raised on a healthy diet of Country greats - Willie, Merle, Loretta, Dolly, Ricky - far, far away from Nashville or Austin. So, while their traditional sound is strong musically, the band's background has encouraged the mates to spread their wings and build an original repertoire that took them quickly from no-names to being named Best New Band by the Austin Music Awards. After a self-released debut, the trio has put out two CDs on Dualtone - Weather and Water and, most recently, Viridian. In summer 2006, The Greencards made another giant step by touring with music legends as the opening act for Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson's tour of minor league baseball parks.
