Focus On: Folk Alley's 5th Anniversary Concert with David Francey & Harry Manx

Three-time Juno Award-winner Francey has built a large following on both sides of the border by infusing his songs with personal stories of the everyday working man and trials of modern life. A native of Scotland, Francey moved with his family to Toronto, Ontario when he was 12. From there, he set out to explore his adopted country as he hitched his way across Canada three times, working a variety of jobs along the way. As a singer/songwriter/storyteller, Francey's music is filled with the lives of the people that have been part of his journey. In 2006, Francey released "The First Set: Live from Folk Alley," a recording captured at the 38th Kent State Folk Festival that was later aired as an installment of "Live from Folk Alley."

Since October 2006, Craig Werth has served as the accompanist/co-arranger for Francey. Werth served as co-producer for Francey's "Right of Passage" which won a best album Juno in 2008. The New Hampshire musician, songwriter, educator, and humorist also writes and performs his own music, using his personal experiences and his Newfoundland, Long Island and Catskill Mountain roots as inspiration.

Manx has been nominated for Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy) in both the Roots & Traditional and Blues categories, recognizing his mix of influences, including Asian Indian, North American Folk and Blues. Like Francey, Manx immigrated to Canada at an early age, coming to North America from the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. While still in his teens, he developed a wanderlust that led him to life as a street corner busker in Europe, Japan, India and Brazil. A five-year apprenticeship with Rajasthani Indian musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt permanently infused Manx's music with Asian melodies and instrumentation, making his performance style an entrancing blend of East and West.

This concert was recorded live in Evans Amphitheatre at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights, Ohio during Folk Alley's 5-year Anniversary concert in August 2008 by contributing producer Craig Adams.

How GREAT to have a video concert of Harry available this way! I've enjoyed him live 6-7 times and will be sure to be there when he's next in my town!
