Focus On: Arlo Guthrie

Arlo Davey Guthrie was born the 5th child of the legendary songwriting troubadour, Woody Guthrie. A shy boy growing up, the younger Guthrie originally left home with the idea of going into forestry. But the son of a musician and a dancer (Woody's second wife, Marjorie Greenblatt Mazia Guthrie), he drifted into the life of a performer. He wrote a short song about a restaurant run by friends in a deconsecrated church that he played in concert while telling a much longer story that involved a Thanksgiving dinner, littering with the best of intensions, and avoiding the draft because of his subsequent conviction. Guthrie's live performances of "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" led to a platinum album, a movie, an appearance at Woodstock (and on the album and in the documentary) and a 40-year career as a professional musician. His original songs are often political and/or humorous, combining skillful musicianship with an ear for lyrics.

Most recently, Guthrie's tours have included one or more of his children, primarily Sarah Lee and her husband/musical partner Johnny Irion. For his appearance on the Evans Amphitheatre stage, Guthrie performed solo, revisiting four decades worth of his original songs and covers of songs he popularized, such as Steve Goodman's "The City of New Orleans." His most recent CD, In Times Like This, was recorded with the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra.

Arlo Guthrie's "Summer Solo Reunion Tour" was recorded live at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights, Ohio on July 21, 2007 by contributing producer Craig Adams.

I am fairly new to Folk Alley membership and am looking through the lists for artists I know. Just found the Arlo Guthrie concert, wow it took me right back to the late 60s when I first found folk music. I saw Arlo live at the Cambridge (UK) festival he was great then and still is now. I must say that Folk Alley rocks sorry I mean FOLKS :-) keep listening and supporting.
