Green Day - Folkies?

While recently sharing an airport shuttle with a roadie for the band Green Day, I was reminded of something posted in one of my posts about the Bruce Springsteen tour. A reader (posting from the U.K.) commented that seeing Bruce do folk is a little like seeing Gloria Estefan doing traditional Latin music. That I don't know about (and I think she would rock it out), but he also suggested that Green Day was the best American folk-rock group working today. I can kind of see that - from a certain angle, if I squint and tilt my head to the left. What do you think? Is Green Day a folkie band? And, who do you think is creating great folk rock these days?

Back From Across the Pond

This is my first day back to work after my fabulous family vacation to London (via the Queen Mary 2) and Paris. It was very refreshing to be away, although I'm happy to be home. I really missed Folk Alley! Our hotels didn't have free Internet and surfing on board the ship was really pricey, so I went cold turkey. I did meet some lovely folk music fans (I wore my Folk Alley T's while in London) and handed out some pins, so hopefully a few more visitors will find their way here - especially the very kind banjo collector I met at the Tate Gallery. There wasn't time for us to take in any of the summer music fests, but I did enjoy lovely acoustic music in the London Tube stations and Covent Garden (a strolling accordionist tried to hit me up for some Euros on the way back from Versailles, but the exchange rate stinks and I was too hot to move). And, I spotted CDs by Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Garland Jeffreys on prominent display at the Virgin Megastore under the Louvre. So, good to talk to you again, anything exciting happen while I was gone?

Fairport Convention's Cropredy Festival Right Around The Corner

For those of you in the UK, or those who like to travel, Fairport Convention's annual Cropredy Festival is happening August 10-12. This is the UK's biggest folk festival--drawing about 25,000 people each year. Along with Fairport, Steeleye Span is playing the event this year along with Ashley Hutchings, John Martyn, and 10cc. So who's been to Cropredy? What's it like? Are you going this year? I've yet to go but 2007 might be the year I finally make it--anyone wanna go?

Won't You Help?

Our friend, Jon Chandler from Salem, Oregon wrote in today. He needs our help finding the title to a mystery song that's stuck in his head! So far, Jim Blum and the rest of us at FA have come up empty, so we need to turn it over to you, the Folk Alley audience!
Here's Jon's letter with some clues:

Good morning and thanks in advance, both for the possible help and for providing the service. I have been a listener/contributor for several years, and have turned on many of my aging folkie friends to Folk Alley.
So here’s my question: I’ve had a song stuck in my head for a couple months now. I have no idea who the artist is or what the title is, and I’ve scoured my personal music collection in case it was hiding in my ipod someplace…I’ve googled the lyrics I can remember, I’ve dug through a number of lyric websites (and there are some gawdawful lyrics out there!), rooted around the Folk Alley play list, but nope. Since I primarily listen to either Folk Alley or my own collection, and since I don’t think I have the damned thing, I’m hoping you can help me with this musical exorcism. If you get songs stuck, you’ll understand.
The lyrics I recall include:
Something about the bottom of a mason jar;
Something else about “take me to the _______th floor” ;
And yet another disconnected vague recollection about “la la la blue…la la la back at you”;
And still one more which in my mind is “share and share again” but that could be a mondegreen.
I prolly have it all tangled up, but it’s a fine tune and I’d love to know who did it. I can hum it for you, but I’ve found humming to be of limited utility in an email.
Any help you could provide would be welcome, including, I suppose, recommendations for either therapists or pharmaceuticals.
