Artie Traum Dead at 65

July 25, 2008

There is more on Artie Traum in the Folk Alley Forum, including the NYT obit. A fingerpicking guitar stylist, Traum was a valued part of the Woodstock music scene. He was also a composer and educator. With his brother Happy, he was a member of the Woodstock Mountains Revue. He passed on July 20 of cancer.

Here's a great video of Artie playing:

I can't believe that Artie has died... or Erik Darling... or Jim Ringer... or Utah Philips... and so many others. But we need to make sure that they are not just a sidebar mention. They played wonderful music, inspired many players at festivals and coffeehouses around the world. Keep playing folk music. It is the tribute we can give them.

I remember Artie as an excited, inspiried and encouraging person filled with life and thoughtfulness. I remember playing with him in the 60s in Washingotn Square and his inclusive and supportive style of helping me along, as a younger musician. I just pulled out "Mud Acres" with Artie and Happy, and John Herald and lots of others.Sad and Celebratory.
