Folk Performances Live On YouTube

January 24, 2008

YouTube is a wonderful thing. Type almost anything in the search box and three hours later you're watching something completely different and you wonder where your day went. Folk Alley General Manager Al Bartholet has been searching for folk artists and he's found some gems. Soon, we'll have a little archive set up. In the meantime, feel free links to your favorite vids (no skiing squirrels, please!) below. Here's what Al had to say:

"Fans and artists all pursue songs that they have fallen in love with - songs that you never get tired of hearing 25 years later. Angel from Montgomery shows up in the strangest places, like in the movie Courage Under Fire with Meg Ryan and Denzel Washington (Ryan sings the song under duress in a combat situation in the first Iraqi war). The song continues to be passed down from generation to generation. We start off with John Prine the writer, who gives some insight into the song and then performs it as he appears to be standing in a river. And then, of course, Bonnie Raitt who popularized the song in the '70s and on to Susan Tedeschi."

I just discovered this too, and posted about it on my blog; there you'll also find a link to John Prine chatting and singing at someone's kitchen table -- wonderful!

Yep. I was recently checking out YouTube videos of the Kingston Trio. Use the link below to read about the life and recent death of songwriter and former Kingston Trio member John Stewart. The picture at the top of the web page is of him and his wife Buffy in 1970.

My favorite Kingston Trio songs are The Tattooed Lady and Bad Man Blunder.

Two weekends ago, our house was besieged by the twin TV monsters of writers' strike-stricken shows and the loss of cable. While I should have (and did) pick up a book or two, I also spent a couple pleasant hours surfing You Tube. From Tommy Emmanuel to my hero Harry Chapin and even Jud Strunk, the one hit wonder whose song "Daisy A Day" inspired me to pick up the guitar--I was in heaven and my kids learned a bit more about the music I love.

I think the WGA strike is going to force many people (me included) to think about other things to do other than watch TV. I've been listening to a lot of folk alley and critically reading through the pile of magazines that have accumulated on my coffee table (just because it's pretty, doesn't mean I need to keep it).
