Music for the Half-Pipe

February 16, 2006

So, I've been slacking at Folkalley this week. The place wasn't getting very dirty because everyone was at Folk Alliance. I know Sarah thought I missed everyone because I was washing the same spot on the floor all the time, but that's the best spot to watch the TV, and the Olympics have been on all week.

I've been really impressed by the snow boarders, and thought it was interesting that all these kids rock out on their ipods while they are competing. Do they let the cross country skiers wear ipods?

So anyway, in each of the interviews the kids try to be more cool than the others by naming some obscure band only their friends at school have ever heard about.

But it prompted a question since I'm surrounded by folk music here at the alley. If you were competing as a snow boarder at the Olympics, what folk song would you play as you performed your inverted aerials and 720 spins? I think I'd either listen to Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash or Casey Jones by the Grateful Dead (which may not be technically a folk song, but at least I could borrow the mp3 from the kids).

I can picture myself doing a frontside 1080 to the delectable sound of “Dueling Banjos”. Yeah.

"Faded", "Will to Live", and "Homeless Child" by Ben Harper (ja!), and most ANYthing kickin' by Robert Randolph and the Family Band.
"Elan" and definitly "Haste to the Wedding" (Trad Celtic), just to name a few.

In playlist order:

- Black is the Color by James McNally (warming up)
- Equos Fair and Stormcry by David Arkenstone (performing)
- Tubular Bells by Jem Moore (performing)
- In The Grip of Stronger Stuff by Ian Anderson (waiting for results)

And then, if I win, "Sheik of Araby" by Leon Redbone. ;)

Oh, so the truth comes out Norman! The whole week I thought you were sad about being left behind while the rest of our gang was having crazy fun with out us! If I was in the Olympics, I think I would listen to “Sister Kate” by The Ditty Bops. It’s such a catchy tune, upbeat and lively. On Friday, I found another song that I have to get up out of my chair and move to while listening. I was working in a studio and Ashley was in the studio next to me. I happened to look over just as she started dancing around. She had had been listening to “Hartfordtown 1944” by Mark Erelli. She played it for me and the moment the music started my feet were tapping and we were cutting a rug. It’s a sad story but the music is great!

Hi Norman,
As a "pinhead telemarker," it's really hard to picture myself as a snowboarder. I have not yet joined the ranks of "bud-eared" outdoor enthusiasts and can't quite comprehend having stereo tunes while enjoying the winter mountains. This is especially true since I have not yet mastered even being able to link turns and chew gum at the same time!
However, imagining myself in that hypothetical situation, I would definitely download David Wilcox's "Make it Look Easy" from the 1994 release "Big Horizon." Then on the lift heading up for the next run, I'd have to make up my own next verse about snowsports!
A close second choice might be Stevie Nicks' "Landslide", but I'm partial to the covered version by Taos NM's Michael Hearne from his 2002 "Live at the Old Blinking Light" CD with Kelly Stebbins on vocals.
Great suggestions on the other posts!

After strapping my feet to the snowboard with two rolls of duct tape (hey, did you know duct tape is like THE FORCE? A light side/dark side, and holds the Universe together) anyhow. . . I would be screaming my own version of, "She'll be comin' 'round the mountain IF she comes. . . .!"
