Nice to see Steve Earle get the grammy. We need his straight talk and passion in the industry.

My husband and I have been lovers of folk music since our teenage years. We grew up listening to the likes of Pete Seeger, Peter Paul and Mary, Joan Baez and we still do.

I read Christine Lavin's article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A17228-2005Feb11 - registration required) in last Sunday's Washington Post and I agree--it would have been nice to see a Grammy go to the late Dave Van Ronk.

Steve Earle is a folk singer? Since when? The ONLY reason he got the award is that the CD is nothing but one long screed against George Bush and the awards committee, agreeing with the politics, looked around long and hard for a catagory to stick it in where there aren't enough fans with clout to complain about the award.

I think there's a lot of truth to that. To boot, the album was pretty rocked-out. But, the Academy has a history of using Folk categories as a catch-all. Last year they gave the Grammy to Warren Zevon (mostly because he was dying).

I think Steve's album fits the folk category, because folk music (to me, anyway) is about the common man (everyman) and how they are affected by what is going on in the political arena. And..... an expression of protest in an artistic fashion.
