I Love Richard Shindell

August 25, 2004

As reminded by Scott Powell below, Richard Shindell's latest also hit the shelves yesterday. Vuelta was recorded in Argentina, where Shindell is now living with his family. Jim has already added several songs to the playlist, including Cancion Sencilla, which was written as a "letter-song" in Spanish. I credit Jim completely for my discovery of Richard Shindell, who has several solo albums on his resume as well as Cry, Cry, Cry with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky. IMHO, he is one of the finest singer/songwriters working today on the planet. He's on the road in the U.S. beginning in Sept. and my only question is to see him in Ann Arbor at the Ark, in Cleveland at the Beachland Ballroom, or both. Eliza Gilkyson will open for most of his tour.

Richard seems to be always improving. The first time I saw him, he was opening for Gillian Welch or Bruce Cockburn ... I couldn't wait for his set to be over, as the lyrics were totally unintelligible. However, WYEP-FM in Pittsburgh (gotta be one of the best !) began playing more of his stuff, and then I bought "Somewhere Near Patterson" ! --terrific record ! Saw Richard open for Joan Baez at the Palace in Greensburg, PA. a couple of years ago. It was a great show, and they were good together, too!

Just picked up "Vuelta" last week - really a fine recording; I could easily add 7 or 8 of those songs to the 'favorites' page of my RealOne Player. Richard made a great choice of using Puente Celeste as his primary back-up band; I found them to be a more serene and complimentary ensemble - a perfect weekend afternoon CD. Good goin', RS!

I just discovered Richard Shindell. He has reignited a passion for this type of music I thought I had lost many years ago, and for that I owe him. Vuelta is magnificent.
